Headband Place Value

Last week my first graders were learning place value and that is such a tricky concept. However, I know the concept is easier when you use academic vocabulary! So I started thinking of ways students would be encouraged to use academic vocabulary but could have fun in the process...then I remembered a post from Wade and Hope King os using the game headbands! I knew that was exactly what I would do. So I ran to Dollar Tree and bought 24 headbands for $2! Cmon y'all, that is a cheap way to keep kids engaged while assessing what they knew! So then I made a quick matching game, which you can find the freebie, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gvLsCQUD6kr2OZI6tS0LqLyux40jW8F5/view?usp=sharing. I cut it out and really wish I would have laminated them! I then explained to the students they were going to get a card that they would not see. However, they would get to see other friends cards. Somewhere in the room was someone with the same number as them but the number looked like tens and ones. They had to find their partner while guessing what their number was. Students were so excited! I was shocked when I heard students using the level of vocabulary to describe what they saw or to add up what they had in their head!
