Scared.
Why I teach? Today on our field trip a student was scared. With a panicked face and fear filled eyes, he whispered my name.
“Miss Pearson, I think I’m scared”.
I replied with let me come hold your hand.
Another student held up his hand.
“Here, hold mine. I’m scared too”.
My heart quickened. I teach them everyday that we are ALL in this together. We are a family. We are here to help each other grow and pick each other up when we fall. I try with everything in me to create this culture. I try to model this culture. To teach this culture. I want them to understand, we will ALWAYS HAVE EACH OTHER.
Today it hit me like a ton of bricks. What if we as educators did this? What if when another teacher said, “I think I’m scared” it didn’t take the principal or the teachers best friend to stand beside them? What if we simply reached out our hand and were there, no matter who they were?
What if we as Christians were vulnerable enough to admit when there was fear? What if we stepped in without expectation? What if we were there because that’s what people need? What if we admitted we also were imperfect and stood beside people in our imperfections?
Everyday these kids amaze me. The truth is, I don’t CREATE this culture of family. THEY DO. They stand tall, lend hands, and listen to fears from each other. THEY put each other first and that makes my heart explode with hope. Hope for the future of the world. That maybe people will lend hands, without thinking about color, socioeconomic status, without asking their religion, because that’s the culture our world is in desperate need of.
If first graders can create that culture....we should be able to create that culture. We should learn from them. ❤️
