Celebrating
To every teacher: Don’t get caught up in celebrating....this week I have been humbled yet again. //
We have been learning about the first Thanksgiving and how it has changed and stayed the same. One kid loud and proud, says “The feast stayed the same”. I had a kid very respectfully disagree with another student because he doesn’t eat a “feast” for Thanksgiving. My heart broke and my mind began to process. Not every kid, not every family, gets my sisters green bean casserole, my moms killer pies, or even my dads turkey. “Feast” is unimaginable to some. Food is even often unimaginable to some. So today we had a Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving. Why? Because Charlie Brown teaches us a life lesson. Thanksgiving is not about what we eat, how much we eat, or what we are buying that night. “But Thanksgiving is more than eating. Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together. I think that's what they mean by Thanksgiving...” Thanksgiving is about being together. So today I showed them we could have a “feast” with popcorn, pretzels, jelly beans, crackers, and juice. Why? Because kids deserve to see Holidays aren’t about the hype or the tradition, they are about the people. It doesn’t matter what you do or what you eat. Some kids can’t do and maybe can’t eat.The people that love you, fight for you and sometimes with you, and the people who choose to spend their day with you...THAT MATTERS. Not every kid gets the hype, so teach them the meaning. The meaning is what matters. The reason we celebrate changes their life...not how we celebrate. ❤️
