Recently our first grade team did a Super Mario Room Transformation and it was AWESOME! Here is a post about how we did it, what we used, and maybe it will help with anyone wanting to do something similar! Now these were backwards designed specifically for out math unit and unit exam. I have to say this transformation helped as I had a huge success in this assessment! But this could be adapted to anything or any content!
My mom is super creative and made my Mario costume with blue sweatpants, a red long sleeve shirt, and a blue t shirt. However, I did buy my hat and mustache from party city. Which, you can find here, http://www.partycity.com/product/super+mario+brothers+mario+costume+kit.do?from=Search&navSet=mario%20costumes&bypass_redirect=1.
To decorate we used blue plastic table cloths, gold circle plates, yellow square plates, gold stars, wrapped boxes, and Super Mario cut outs (which we drew and a parent colored).
Almost everything was bought from dollar tree, Walmart, or Amazon.
The students were given hats and a colored bracelet (which let them know what station they needed to be at) before they entered. The hats were made with green and red cardstock and I got the idea from here, http://www.cuteasafox.com/2011/08/mario-and-luigi-poster-board-visors.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+CuteAsAFox+(Cute+As+a+Fox). When students entered the world of Mario, there was music blaring [so much Super Mario music on youtube] and they had to enter using a tunnel which I purchased on Amazon! https://www.amazon.com/6-foot-Tunnel-Outdoor-Crawling-Hide-n-Side/dp/B01E489AKO/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1515451788&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=tunnel&psc=1
When we got the students settled and welcomed them. We had a quick clip showing them that Princess Peach had been stolen and that Mario and Luigi needed our help. Each student needed to beat all of the levels in order to rescue Princess Peach at the end! After this video the kids were in, they were ready to show us what they knew. There were 5 levels and the kids ran to their level to get started!
Level 1: Was a large ten frame where students played the game "make ten", which I derived from a grade my kids play in my class, "I Sea Ten".
Level 2: Was a missing addend game in which students had to fill the egg with the correct addend.
Level 3: Students had to solve subtraction and addition world problems using a number line!
Level 4: Students used marshmallows to solve subtraction missing addend word problems.
Level 5: Students had to play Jenga. The color block they pulled meant they had to pull that color card and answer it correctly.
After students completed each level they came back and watched another video that said....they had rescued Princess Peach! Then my awesome boss walked in, in COSTUME! She thanked the first graders for trying to hard to save her and had a special prize for a student who tried their best! Y'all, those kids were so EXCITED! I have never seen them more engaged and they were so PROUD of themselves! (I WAS TO)
Here is the entire day in video form. Watch the video and watch our kids excitement. That is why I teach! They were eager to learn and eager to rescue the Princess. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. :)
